Comparing In-Person and Online Yoga Teacher Training: Our Experience

Choosing between an Online Yoga Teacher Training Course (TTC) and an in-person one can be challenging. Both have their pros and cons and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. In this article, we’ll share our experience as an established yoga school to help you choose what’s best for your needs.

Online TTCs boomed during COVID-19, offering accessible options for many aspiring teachers who could not leave home and gather. However, as lockdowns were lifted worldwide, a strong desire for human interaction and traveling emerged among people.

Online TTCs boomed during COVID-19, offering accessible options for many aspiring teachers

While online TTCs remain a popular option for some, we came to the conclusion that in-person learning provides advantages that remote courses can hardly match.

Keep reading and discover why at One Yoga, we’ve decided to steer away from Online TTCs and favor in-person yoga training for those seeking a holistic and transformative experience.

The Benefits of Online Yoga Teacher Training

While we prioritize in-person training at One Yoga, we recognize that Online Yoga Teacher Training Courses do offer several notable benefits. Let’s have a look at them.

  • Flexibility: With pre-recorded classes, Online TTCs allow you to learn at your own pace and schedule, making it easier to balance with personal and professional commitments.
  • Accessibility: These courses make yoga training accessible to people worldwide, regardless of location. However, you need a strong discipline to regularly show up on the mat from your home.
  • Experienced Teachers: You can train with sought-after experts that you didn’t have access to before because their courses were fully booked, too far away, or over your budget.
  • Cost-Effective: Often, online TTCs are more affordable than in-person programs, saving on travel and accommodation expenses. But you should also consider the overall value – read more below.
  • Camera Confidence: By teaching in front of a camera, you’ll become comfortable teaching online. This can enable you to create your own online programs and, potentially, work remotely.
  • Comfort of Home: Training from the comfort of your own home can provide a convenient learning environment. However, it might not always be distraction-free.
Online Yoga Teacher Training Courses do offer several notable benefits

Despite these advantages, we believe that the depth and richness of in-person training offer unique benefits that online programs can’t match. Here’s why.

Why at One Yoga We Chose In-Person Training Over Online Yoga TTC

When the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in December 2019, many business activities across the world were left scrambling in uncertainty. Among them were traditional yoga schools, which had mainly focused on in-person classes and training.

At One Yoga, our journey through the pandemic led us to embrace Online Yoga Teacher Training Courses, a choice shared by many other yoga schools.

As we adapted to the new reality, remote teaching offered a way to continue our mission of making a positive impact through yoga while keeping our school alive.

After the initial obstacles of setting up a quality online course, we were happy to notice that online TTCs allowed us to reach an even bigger student base. In fact, we did not have to deal with limitations posed by space and accommodation, as group sizes could grow exponentially.

remote teaching offered a way to continue our mission of making a positive impact through yoga

We set up a solid online platform and a comprehensive course structure similar to the in-person one. We had a dedicated Facebook group, one-on-one Zoom calls, and teaching assignments with personal feedback. Our Online TTC was approved and certified by Yoga Alliance.

We did our best to keep transmitting authentic yoga teachings and our students complimented us with positive feedback. However, as we moved on, we realized that something was missing.

The New Normal: Back to The Roots of Yoga

Despite the potential for a wider reach, we felt that the transmission of genuine, traditional knowledge couldn’t be fully captured in a virtual setting.

Our mission at One Yoga has always been to offer deep, transformative experiences that go beyond mere instruction. We believe that the true spirit of yoga thrives in personal connections, hands-on practice, and unwavering yoga practice.

Therefore, the decision to prioritize in-person TTCs was driven by our commitment to quality. We wanted to create a space where students could benefit from direct interaction with experienced instructors, immediate feedback, and the supportive energy of a like-minded community.

This approach ensures that each participant receives personalized guidance and fully embodies the teachings of yoga. Moreover, hosting in-person TTCs on our beachfront campus on Koh Phangan allows us to provide an immersive experience that fosters growth and learning, away from distractions.

Nevertheless, we chose to make all the Online TTC material that we had created available for our students. So, when you book an in-person training, you can select to include the Online add-on which enables you to review all the TTC classes after graduating, wherever you are.

By focusing on in-person training, we continue to uphold our dedication to delivering high-quality, authentic yoga education. Let’s review the reasons behind our choice more in detail.

Comparing Online Yoga Teacher Training with In-Person Courses: Our Perspective

As a dedicated yoga school, we’ve experienced both online and in-person Teacher Training Courses (TTCs) firsthand. While we understand the appeal of online TTCs, our journey has shown us the higher value of in-person courses.

We’d like to share our insights to help you understand the unique benefits of each format, emphasizing why we believe in-person training offers a more comprehensive and transformative experience.

Comparing Online Yoga Teacher Training with In-Person Courses

1. The Depth of In-Person Immersion Into Practice

An In-person yoga teacher training offers an unparalleled immersive learning experience that online courses simply can’t replicate.

At One Yoga, we believe that true mastery of yoga requires more than just theoretical knowledge. It demands hands-on practice, real-time feedback, and personal interaction with experienced instructors and peers.

An In-person yoga teacher training offers an unparalleled immersive learning experience that online courses

In-person TTCs provide a rich environment where students can deeply engage with the teachings, ask questions, and receive immediate corrections. This immersive setting fosters a deeper understanding of yoga principles and techniques, allowing for a more profound personal transformation.

The direct guidance and support from skilled instructors help students refine their practice and teaching skills, ensuring they are well-prepared to lead their own classes confidently. In-person training at One Yoga is not just about learning yoga. it’s about living it fully.

2. Counting on a Supportive Yoga Community

When a yoga teacher training goes beyond individual learning, it helps build a strong sense of community. Being part of a physical group allows for genuine connections with like-minded individuals who share your passion for yoga.

This supportive network can provide encouragement, motivation, and a sense of belonging that enhances the learning experience. Networking opportunities abound, as students collaborate, share insights, and build lasting friendships.

an Online Yoga Teacher Training can connect you remotely but an in-person TTC offers a supportive yoga community

These relationships often extend beyond the training period, offering continued support and professional connections in the yoga world. The communal aspect of in-person TTCs creates a nurturing environment where students can grow together, both personally and professionally.

At One Yoga, we cherish the bonds formed during our in-person programs, knowing that the community spirit is a vital component of the transformational journey in yoga.

We know that Teacher Training can be a challenging experience for anyone. That’s why our teachers are available to answer questions and offer support every step of the way.

While an Online Yoga Teacher Training can also connect you remotely with the community of teachers and practitioners, we believe that the in-person experience can be more enriching for an aspiring yoga teacher.

3. The Importance of a Serene Learning Environment

Imagine immersing yourself in a serene beachfront campus on a tropical island, away from the city bustle, where you can deeply focus and relax.

We get it. Taking an entire month off work and traveling to another country is not always an option for everybody. Yet, a tranquil and pleasant learning environment plays a pivotal role in a yoga teacher training experience.

Koh Phangan, with its pristine beaches and lush landscapes, offers an inspiring backdrop that fosters deep focus and relaxation. This tranquil setting allows students to immerse themselves fully in their practice and studies.

a Serene Learning Environment fosters deep focus and relaxation

The natural surroundings encourage mindfulness and meditation, essential elements for absorbing the teachings of yoga. The soothing sounds of the ocean and the gentle tropical breeze create an ideal atmosphere for self-reflection and personal growth.

Such a peaceful environment supports a deeper connection with oneself and the practice of yoga, enhancing the overall learning and introspective experience.

We don’t deny that some people might be able to find a quiet space and make enough time for an Online Yoga TTC from home. However, we have noticed that students are more receptive when they’re unplugged from daily worries and immersed in a nourishing environment.

4. Hands-On Practice and Real-Time Guidance

Hands-on practice and real-time guidance are crucial for mastering yoga teaching skills. In-person training offers direct interaction with experienced instructors who provide immediate feedback and hands-on adjustments, enhancing the learning experience.

This personal attention helps students refine their techniques and build confidence in their teaching abilities. While Online teacher training courses offer flexibility and access to digital resources, they lack the immediacy of face-to-face corrections and the tactile learning that comes from in-person adjustments.

Hands-On Practice and Real-Time Guidance

Online courses are often pre-recorded and the teacher does not see the student practicing until they have an online call. Although online students can learn from anywhere in the world, the screen poses a barrier to the fluency of the learning experience.

Practicing in a real-world setting allows for more effective learning, as students can immediately apply feedback and observe their progress.

The supportive atmosphere of an in-person TTC encourages growth and development, making it a preferable option for those seeking in-depth yoga education focusing on details.

5. Personal and Spiritual Transformation

In-person yoga courses offer a holistic approach to personal and spiritual growth that is difficult to achieve through an Online Teacher Training.

The immersive environment of an in-person TTC allows for deep self-exploration and transformation, supported by the presence of experienced instructors and a like-minded community.

Engaging in daily practices, such as meditation, pranayama, and asana, in a serene setting fosters a profound connection with oneself and the teachings of yoga.

In-person yoga courses offer a holistic approach to personal and spiritual growth that is difficult to achieve through an Online Teacher Training

While online TTCs provide valuable theoretical knowledge and flexibility, they often lack the depth of personal interaction and the enriched experience of being physically present.

The shared journey with fellow students in an in-person setting creates a unique supportive network, enhancing the overall growth process.

This comprehensive approach ensures that participants not only learn to teach yoga but also undergo significant personal and spiritual development, making in-person TTCs a superior choice for those seeking a transformative experience.

In-Person and Online Yoga Teacher Training: The Value Beyond Cost

When comparing the costs of Online Yoga Teacher Training and in-person courses, it’s important to consider the value beyond just the monetary expense.

Online TTCs often appear more affordable due to savings on travel and accommodation, and they provide the convenience of learning from home. However, the investment in an in-person TTC offers long-term benefits that can significantly enhance your teaching career.

The personalized instruction, hands-on practice, and immersive experience in a serene environment contribute to a deeper understanding and mastery of yoga philosophy and techniques.

Additionally, the connections made and the community support available during in-person training are invaluable. These elements help to build a strong foundation for a successful and fulfilling career in yoga.

In-Person and Online Yoga Teacher Training: Understanding the Value Beyond Cost

After your course, an in-person certification is often viewed as more authoritative in the yoga community. This can open more career opportunities and build greater trust with future students.

Presenting yourself as someone who has undergone comprehensive, hands-on training at a well-established yoga institution can set you apart in a competitive field.

While online TTCs have their merits, the comprehensive value provided by in-person training makes it a worthwhile investment for those committed to becoming skilled, confident, and knowledgeable yoga teachers.

Final Thoughts

Choosing between an online Yoga Teacher Training Course and an in-person one is a personal decision with unique benefits for each option.

Online TTCs offer flexibility, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness, making them appealing to many. However, our experience at One Yoga has shown us that in-person training provides unparalleled depth, community, and immersive learning that online courses struggle to match.
